2012 Mazda CX-9
11/23/12 - Overview
This Mazda CX-9 SUV is the latest addition to our fleet. Our 2007 Mazda Mazda5
Compact Mini-Van was just the thing for smaller kids and short
trips, but it lacked room that our kids needed. After
looking at the 2012 Ford Explorer closely, we decided to go back to Mazda
to see if there was a better deal. We found this Mazda right on their
showroom floor and decided that it would be a good choice. The financing
and trade in values were favorable, which made this purchase an easy
decision. For the price of the much smaller Ford Escape AWD, we were able
to a much bigger SUV.
The Mazda CX-9 is a seven passenger CUV, Cross Over, SUV that is built on
the Ford CD3 platform. The CD3 is used on other Ford cars and trucks
including the Mazda6, Ford Edge, Fusion and Lincoln MKx. When it
debuted in 2008, it won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. It has a lot in
common with the Ford Edge but with some differences.
The CX-9 features a version of the Ford Cyclone 3.7L V6 which produces
265 HP and 250LBS of torque. It is mated to a six speed automatic
transmission, which is the same as the Ford Edge. This combo gets the CX-9
moving with ease despite the extremely hefty 4,528 LBS curb weight. Its no
rocket, but it is quick on the road. The CX-9 goes down the 1/4 track at
15.9 @ 87.7 MPH.
Our Mazda CX-9 Cross Over SUV
After looking at the feature lists between the Mazda
CX-9 Grand Touring and the regular Touring model, we decided to opt
for the Touring model. The features that were important to us were
included in the Touring model, so it was enough. The biggest things we
lost was the 20" wheels, HID headlights, auto dimming mirror and the
memory seats. Those features are nice but were not the most important.
Our CX-9 came with many features including heated leather seats, back
up camera, Bose stereo system, rear heat and air, 18" Bridgestone all
season tires, moonroof and most importantly, AWD. Later, we added a
class 3 towing hitch to allow us some extra capabilities. I would like
to purchase the rear cargo cover in the future.
The CX-9 is a great way to transport families around town. Everyone is
comfortable with the plush seating and rear climate controls and
privacy glass. I couldn't think of a better truck to take across
country on vacation other than a Lincoln Town Car. Its cargo area is a
good size for a long trip, especially with the 3rd row down. You could
do some serious shopping at the mall and bring back tons of packages.
Speaking of the cargo area, my CX-9 is equipped with a power lift
If you are in the market for a crossover, SUV or CUV, I would give a
serious look at the Mazda CX-9.
